Pre Engineered Buildings are those which are engineered before manufacturing begins. The components are made in factory and shipped to client location for assembling. PEBs are essentially steel structures. The panels, frames and other components are assembled with joists, bolts etc. at the construction site. This kind of new age construction is popularly used to build industrial structures like warehouses, factory buildings, airport terminal buildings, etc.
While conventional construction is commonplace, Pre Engineered Buildings are becoming more and more popular these days. The reason is they are economical and quick to build.
Components of a Pre Engineered Building:
Pre Engineered Buildings are primarily made of steel and have the following structural components:
- Primary Frame: All PEBs come with a primary grame which is essentially an H-shaped or I-shaped frame and consists of components like columns, rafters, crane brackets,
- Secondary Structural Elements: These are secondary structures which are meant for providing support to the primary structure. These consist of C or Z shaped purlins, girts, eave struts, etc.
- Roof & Wall Panels : Roof panels consist of single skin sheet or insulated sandwich panels. For daylight, FRP panels and polycarbonate sheets are used.
- Sandwich Panels: Insulated Sandwich Panel are made of two layers of pre-painted galvanized iron sheets with a layer of foamed panels in between
- Other Accessories: Joists, struts, bolts, mezzanine, etc.
The Structure
In this way, the engineer using sophisticated computer programs can design the most efficient shape for the building frame. The steel material is placed where it is needed and eliminated from where it is not, adding economy without compromising design. Typically, welded shapes are only welded on one side. There is technically no reason for welding to be on both sides unless shear force requires it, and shear force in rigid frames is usually relatively low.
As the name itself sounds, these buildings are engineered and designed prior to manufacturing. The team of engineers and technicians work in close coordination to come out with an efficient design that can be expanded further as needed.
Benefits of PEBs:
There are many benefits of Pre Engineered Buildings. The notable ones are as below:
- Quality control is easy: Having control over quality is the biggest benefit of PEBs. The structural parts are engineered and manufactured prior to transportation, so one can easily check and adhere to quality standards before construction. This is usually done by quality teams at the vendor’s end, with a quality control engineer to supervise the process.
- It is cost-effective: There is long-term saving due to the time and reusability factor.
- Fast construction: Construction happens factors since the components are pre engineered and made in controlled environment.
- Low Maintenance: PEBs are low maintenance since steel has a long life and is reusable. These structures can withstand harsh weather conditions as well. Overall, this leads to lower maintenance cost as compared to brick and mortar structures.
The Applications:
Applications of pre-engineered buildings are countless and across multiple sectors. Some of the popular ones are:
Warehouse
Factory sheds
Industrial sheds
Agriculture Buildings
Airport terminal buildings
Aircraft Hangars
School/college buildings
