Factory Building Construction

If there is one thing that remains consistent, it is change. Change is inevitable with times. Construction technology has also evolved leaps and bounds over the years. One such revolutionary change was the pre engineered buildings. Though pre-engineered buildings have been around for a few decades now, the prominence has been felt only in the recent years. In US, an estimated 70% of the commercial buildings today are pre engineered. There is no doubt that this new construction technology is the new wave.

Pre Engineered Buildings are those which are manufactured off site and carried to the location for installation. The components are assembled using joists, nuts, bolts and other structure specific jointing systems. This mode of construction consumes significantly lesser time and is known for being economical. Since construction happens in a controlled environment with machinery, it improves precision. Construction waste is also reduced significantly.

While the concept of PEB is new in India, it is growing rapidly in government and industrial sectors. The other sectors which have seen a health growth are commercial, institutional and infrastructure sectors in the recent years. Contemporary structures we have today are more aesthetic and complex than those that existed couple of decades ago. The primary structure is made of steel which is lightweight but sturdy. The durability of the material is not compromised with however.

The design can be customised and made according to the client’s requirements. The term pre engineered refers to the process wherein the entire specifications of a building are determined prior to construction. The structural elements, wall panels, roof panels – their dimensions, load bearing capacity, panel thickness, foundation requirements, door/window sizes etc are all worked out before manufacturing begins. This enables pre engineered buildings to have custom design options. Being prefabricated, the installation is easy. All you have to do is assemble the entire structure at the location.

Although mostly used in industrial and non-residential construction, the numbers are soaring in India. As per reports, the current pre engineered steel building manufacturing capacity is estimated to be around 6.0 lac ton per year. The growth continues to be on a steady rise, with an increase of 25 to 30 percent.

PEBs have several advantages when compared to traditional construction. They are optimum in weight, economical and high on durability. Most notably, PEB construction has significantly lower time. Depending on the dimensions and building type, PEBs can be construction faster by about 30 to 60 percent than traditional construction. This is one of the big reason for the world to adopt to pre engineered buildings.
